5 July 2013 |
Coming from ArchiCentre Sdn Bhd, a multidisciplinary architecture design practice, Dexter Koh is part of multi award- winning designs driven by sustainable regionalism to create socially responsive built environments. The portfolio of works ranges from large-scale city and town planning to commercial and residential projects.
We caught up with Dexter and probed him for some insight into the firm's latest MFID win for their s-14 two-storey residence project.
WAS THERE ANY PART OF THE PROJECT WHICH YOU FOUND CHALLENGING?
DK:
S14’s main challenge was to bring new life to a very old and
dilapidated house through the integration of new parts to create a new
home. As much of the old house and materials were retained and recycled.
Not a single tree was cut down from the site.
WHERE DO YOU GET INSPIRATION FROM?
DK: I wanted to create a raw and robust house that sits with the environment.
HOW DOES YOUR HOUSE LOOK LIKE?
DK: My own house? It’s the S11 project which is a tropical GBI platinum rated green house.
WHAT MAKES A ‘HOUSE’ A ‘HOME’?
DK: People and their ideas, dreams and aspirations translate a house into a home.
WHAT ARE SOME WORDS WHICH YOU LIVE BY?
DK: Good design creates added value.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE INTERIOR DESIGN?
DK: I am an Architect, and Interior Design or Interior Architecture is an integral part of what we do as part of our creative process.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE MATERIALS AND WHY?
DK: Currently I am working a lot with raw off form concrete, common brick and block work, and recycled timber.
